Teams Reader role gets broader read-only access in the Teams Admin Center

The Teams Reader role is gaining broader read-only access across the Teams Admin Center, PowerShell, and Microsoft Graph APIs.

The rollout should be completed in May 2026.

How does this affect your organization?

Microsoft introduced the Teams Reader role in May 2025 with permissions limited to specific areas. This update expands the permission scope.
Users assigned the Teams Reader role will gain read-only visibility into the following areas:

  • Teams management pages, including individual Team and channel details
  • Teams tab on the User details page in the Teams admin center
  • PowerShell and Microsoft Graph APIs for Teams and channel management data

Users with the Teams Reader role still have no access to the following areas:

  • Meetings and Calls user details (planned)
  • Notifications and Rules management (planned)
  • Frontline worker deployment management
  • Collaboration activity dashboard
