How to use the new multilingual speech recognition feature in Teams Meetings

Teams will improve the multilingual meeting experience for organizers and participants.
Until now, Teams required a common spoken language for generating transcripts in multilingual meetings.

As noted in the documentation:

If people are speaking a different language than the meeting’s set spoken language, Teams will detect the language mismatch. Then, the meeting organizer, co-organizer, transcript initiator, or initiator of the feature that turned on transcription, will be prompted to update the spoken language.

The new multilingual speech recognition feature allows organizers and participants to select their preferred spoken language during meetings, facilitating better participant communication. With this update, transcripts can be generated in each participant’s chosen language.

Timeline and availability
  • The rollout should be completed between April and June 2025.
  • The organizer must use Teams for Windows, Teams for Mac, or Teams for the web.
  • Meeting participants can use Teams for Windows, Teams for Mac, Teams for the web, and Teams for iOS/Android.

License requirements
  • The multilingual speech recognition feature is available for organizers with a Teams Premium or Microsoft 365 Copilot license. The organizer, not the participants, needs one of these licenses.
  • Internal participants with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license can also use the new Interpreter Agent for real-time translation.

Feature details

The multilingual speech recognition feature is available by default in the meeting options for organizers with a Teams Premium or Microsoft 365 Copilot license. The option is disabled in new meetings.

If an organizer enables this setting, meeting participants see the new option to select what language a user speaks (compared to the previous option, what language “Everyone” is speaking).

Then, you may have this spoken text.

Easter bursts with color and joy as spring blooms to life. Children race through gardens, baskets in hand, hunting for eggs hidden by mischievous bunnies. Laughter fills the air, mingling with the scent of fresh flowers and chocolate. Families gather for hearty meals, stories, and moments of gratitude. It’s a time of renewal, hope, and sweet surprises.

Teams will transcribe and translate the text into the preferred language for each participant.
