Microsoft announced Copilot in SharePoint will reach general availability starting on 30 September 2026.
What Microsoft is not yet actively communicating is that the PowerShell controls previously used to manage Copilot in SharePoint will be retired on 1 November 2026. So far, Microsoft has only updated the documentation.
Retirement of the preview PowerShell controls
PowerShell controls were previously used to manage availability of Copilot in SharePoint. With the transition from public preview to general availability, Copilot in SharePoint is retiring the PowerShell commands used to opt tenants and sites in or out during preview—KnowledgeAgentScope, KnowledgeAgentSelectedSitesList, and KnowledgeAgentSelectedSitesListOperation.
The retirement affects SharePoint sites in tenants where administrators previously configured the tenant setting KnowledgeAgentScope with ExcludeSelectedSites, IncludeSelectedSites, or NoSites.
Existing PowerShell settings continue to be honored until 1 November 2026. After 1 November 2026, administrators must manage availability using Site AI settings and Restricted Content Discovery.
Restricted Content Discovery helps you limit discovery of content from specific SharePoint sites, including recently interacted files, in organization-wide search results and Microsoft Copilot responses while those reviews are taking place.
Restricted Content Discovery also removes AI-powered entry points from these SharePoint sites. Users don’t see entry points such as the Copilot button, AI actions menus (including creating agents), or Create pages with AI. This restriction helps reduce the likelihood of accidental discovery of content while permissions and governance controls are being evaluated.
