Copilot in SharePoint and Copilot in OneDrive will reach general availability starting on 30 September 2026.
With general availability:
- Copilot in SharePoint is switching to a hybrid billing model
Some capabilities are included in the Microsoft 365 Copilot user license, while others use usage-based billing. Users need both a Copilot license and usage-based billing for these capabilities. Read more at SharePoint AI innovations hit GA, powering new Copilot app and agents.
With usage-based billing, Copilot Premium users will be able to generate and edit images directly in document libraries and on sites, create AI-generated reports on how their sites are used, and have file details such as properties filled in automatically shortly after files are added (see autofill columns). Usage-based billing requires Copilot Credits.
- Copilot in OneDrive
Copilot in OneDrive is becoming available to users with a Copilot license. It was rebuilt on the same foundation as Copilot in SharePoint, which should give users a more consistent experience when they create content, organize information, and work with their files, whether those files are stored in OneDrive or on a SharePoint site. - Copilot Search will become the default search experience for Copilot Premium users
Instead of relying only on keywords, users can ask questions in everyday language and receive answers based on content they already have permission to access. As with any AI-generated content, answers may occasionally be inaccurate, so users should verify important details against the original files. Read more at Microsoft Copilot Search.
- Copilot in SharePoint across Copilot Chat, Cowork, Code, and (Copilot) Autopilot
Copilot will gradually improve its understanding of SharePoint and OneDrive content, including libraries, lists, and file details. Users do not need to change the way they work to benefit, as Copilot will simply become more capable with the content they already use every day. These improvements should roll out over the coming months.
Note that Copilot in SharePoint now runs on a Microsoft-managed reasoning model from OpenAI. Microsoft selects and manages the model, and the specific model might change over time as the service adopts newer models. No model configuration is required to use Copilot in SharePoint. When Microsoft introduced Copilot in SharePoint Preview in May, the model came from Anthropic and was not covered by an EU Data Boundary commitment (which is still the case for Anthropic as a subprocessor).
