Microsoft is introducing a new way to open links to Teams messages in chats or channels directly in a separate window. This brings a familiar, browser-like way of working into Teams, letting users view a linked conversation alongside the one they are already in, rather than jumping away from it.
This update should make it easier to compare information, follow up on related discussions, or reference another chat while continuing in the original conversation, helping users stay focused and work more efficiently when multitasking.
Note:
This update is not related to the feature of opening a channel conversation in a new window. The current update affects only links to other Teams messages pasted into chats or channel conversations.
To use this feature:
- Right-click on a message link and select “Open in new window“.

- Hold Ctrl and click the link on Windows, or hold Cmd and click the link on a Mac.
This update should be available by August 2026 for the Teams desktop client on Windows and Mac. It’s not available in Teams on the web.
