Microsoft is updating the licensing requirements for Copilot in Planner, still in Preview. This change affects users with a Planner and Project Plan 3 or Plan 5 license on web and desktop platforms (like in Teams).
As Microsoft mentioned in July 2024:
We are excited to share that Copilot in Planner (preview) is now rolled out to 100% of users with a Planner and Project Plan 3 or Planner and Project Plan 5 license in Planner in Teams.
Organizations relying on Copilot in Planner should now review their license assignments.
Timeline
The updated license requirements will be enforced in early August 2025.
Impact for your users
Currently, users can access Copilot in Planner if a Planner and Project Plan 3 or Plan 5 license is assigned to them. Planner Plan 1 users do not have access to Copilot in Planner.
Starting in August 2025, access to Copilot in Planner will require an additional Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
In summary:
- Users with a Planner and Project Plan 3 or Plan 5 license will also need a Microsoft 365 Copilot license to continue using the Copilot features. Without the Microsoft 365 Copilot license, Copilot in Planner will no longer be available.
- Users with a Planner Plan 1 license plus a Microsoft 365 Copilot license will still have no access to Copilot in Planner.
You should read the Copilot in Planner FAQs for additional details. The FAQs have not yet been updated to reflect the new license requirements.
