Microsoft Mesh will be retired

In September 2023, Microsoft was excited to announce the general availability of Microsoft Mesh, an immersive 3D experience in Teams, for Windows PCs and Quest headsets, where legless avatars floated through virtual spaces. Eager to monetize it, Microsoft locked some features behind a Teams Premium paywall.

It seems customer enthusiasm didn’t quite match Microsoft’s expectations. As a result, Microsoft will retire the following Microsoft Mesh products in December 2025.

Alternative solution

Microsoft recommends hosting immersive events directly within Teams using the integrated Teams calendar. Previously available on the Microsoft Mesh website, these events will soon be integrated within Microsoft Teams, eliminating the need for additional installations. This approach delivers a scalable, seamless 3D meeting experience, designed for large, interactive events.

To host an immersive event, select the drop-down next to New Event and then choose Immersive Event.

  • Users need a Teams Premium license to host immersive events.
  • Users with a Teams Premium license can host immersive events by default.
  • Teams administrators can disable immersive events via a Teams Events Policy. It’s the property ImmersiveEvents.

ImmersiveEvents
This setting governs if a user can create Immersive Events using Teams Events.
Possible values are:

  • Enabled (Default): Enables creating Immersive Events.
  • Disabled: Disables creating Immersive Events.
