Since the end of July, Microsoft 365 Backup and Microsoft 365 Backup Storage have been globally available.
A new admin role “Microsoft 365 Backup Administrator” has been added to Entra ID during the last few weeks.
Previously, an account had to be Global Admin to make initial configurations for Microsoft 365 Backup, or SharePoint / Exchange Admin for additional configurations.
The template ID for the new role is 1707125e-0aa2-4d4d-8655-a7c786c76a25.
The new role is not yet described in the documentation. The role includes a short description.
Microsoft 365 Backup Administrator
Assign the Microsoft 365 Backup Administrator role to users who need to do the following tasks:
- Manage all aspects of Microsoft 365 Backup
- Back up and restore content across SharePoint, OneDrive, and Exchange Online
- Create, edit, and manage backup configuration policies for SharePoint, OneDrive, and Exchange Online
- Perform restore operations for SharePoint, OneDrive, and Exchange Online
