In memory: AI in SharePoint had a shorter lifespan than Bing Chat Enterprise

Microsoft has rebranded AI in SharePoint again; the feature is now named Copilot in SharePoint.

The SharePoint product group has now set a new milestone in Copilot rebranding history: the latest name change lasted less than three months, surpassing even the short-lived Bing Chat Enterprise rebrand in 2023.

The pace of rebranding has apparently outrun the documentation staff. They had not yet completed the update to AI in SharePoint. Now, another round is required.

There is also a naming conflict to consider.
The “rerebranded” Copilot in SharePoint (formerly AI in SharePoint) is a floating Copilot button in the lower-right corner of SharePoint pages.

At the same time, “Copilot in SharePoint” also refers to features included with the Microsoft 365 Copilot license, delivered as part of the Copilot for SharePoint service plan.

Examples include AI in SharePoint pages, AI in SharePoint text, and SharePoint Agents. The floating Copilot button should also be part of that service plan.

When Microsoft publishes future updates to Copilot in SharePoint, administrators should verify which component is affected: the floating button or features tied to the Copilot license.
