OneDrive on Windows is receiving a capacity increase that will benefit users working with large document libraries. The supported sync limit is increasing from 300,000 items to one million items per sync instance on a single device, making it easier for users with extensive OneDrive or SharePoint libraries to keep their content reliably synced across their machines.
This change is relevant for users working with large collections of files stored in OneDrive for Business or SharePoint document libraries who have previously encountered limitations when their libraries approach or exceed the existing 300,000-item threshold.
For optimum performance, we recommend syncing no more than a total of 300,000 items across your cloud storage. Performance issues can occur if you have more than 300,000 items, even if you are not syncing all items.
The simplest way to find the current item count in a OneDrive or SharePoint document library is via the list view threshold warning. Alternatively, SharePoint admins can count document library items using PowerShell.

Eligible Windows devices will automatically be able to take advantage of the higher limit, with no disruption to existing sync setups.
- OneDrive sync client: Devices with the latest OneDrive sync client and OneDrive Insider program enabled, and a recommended sync app configuration.
- Operating system: Windows 11 or Windows Server 2022, with the Windows public preview.
- Memory: 16 GB RAM minimum (32 GB recommended).
- Storage: Solid-state drive (SSD) required.
- Processor: Intel i5 / AMD Ryzen 5 or later, Snapdragon X Plus.
Devices that do not meet the minimum hardware and configuration requirements will continue to sync up to 300,000 items as before, with no change in behavior.
Microsoft notes the performance has not yet been fully optimized for scenarios involving a high volume of read-only files or accounts under legal hold.
- The update applies to users syncing OneDrive consumer, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint document libraries on Windows.
- The initial rollout is available to participants in the Insiders ring as a Public Preview, which should be complete by late April 2026. General Availability is planned for a later date.
