Microsoft cancels licensing enforcement for Loop Workspaces indefinitely

Since the GA release of Loop Workspaces, Microsoft has repeatedly communicated that the license grace period for Loop Workspaces would end. Once enforced, users would need the Microsoft Loop service plan assigned to them.

This service plan is included in the following licenses:

  • Microsoft 365 Business Standard
  • Microsoft 365 Business Premium
  • Microsoft 365 E3, A3, and E3 Extra Features
  • Microsoft 365 E5, A5, and E5 Extra Features
  • Microsoft 365 Copilot

Frontline (F) and Office 365 Enterprise licenses are missing from this list.
If Microsoft were to enforce the Loop license requirements, users without a Loop service plan would no longer be able to perform the following actions:

  • Create new Loop workspaces
  • Add members to Loop workspaces
  • Remove members from Loop workspaces

The initial enforcement date was set for 31 March 2024. This deadline was first extended to 31 December 2024 and later extended again to 31 December 2025.

Microsoft has now canceled the license enforcement indefinitely, with no planned end date at this time. All users in affected tenants can continue to create and manage Loop workspaces without a Loop service plan assigned.

Reminder: An admin can restrict the ability to create Loop workspaces by using an Office Cloud Policy.
