Advanced Tenant Rename now supports SharePoint tenants with up to 500,000 sites

SharePoint Online now supports Advanced Tenant Rename for tenants with up to 500,000 SharePoint sites. Previously, the limit was 100,000 sites (since May 2024).

This extension helps organizations undergoing rebranding, mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, or tenant consolidations align SharePoint domain URLs with a new identity — for example, changing https://contoso.sharepoint.com to https://nextgenerationcopilot.sharepoint.com. Advanced Tenant Rename is not required if you only want to change a site collection URL, such as https://contoso.sharepoint.com/sites/site1.

Timeline

The rollout to General Availability for tenants with up to 500,000 SharePoint sites should be completed in September 2025.

How this affects your organization

Advanced Tenant Rename now extends to larger SharePoint Online environments, offering improved scale and reliability while ensuring business continuity.

  • Support for up to 500,000 (500K) total SharePoint sites
  • Higher reliability across rename operations with enhanced telemetry
  • Business continuity during and after the rename
  • Compatibility with Microsoft 365 partner scenarios, including Microsoft Teams and Power Apps

SharePoint admins can prioritize up to 4,000 sites in their tenant for early execution within the overall rename. This allows business-critical or high-visibility sites to complete first, minimizing potential risks or disruptions to daily operations.

Tenants with more than 10,000 sites must use Advanced Tenant Rename. This feature is part of the SharePoint Advanced Management (SAM) add-on, which is included with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license or available as a standalone license add-on. All users in your organization need the add-on.

Advanced Tenant Rename requires SharePoint PowerShell.
Admins should plan carefully and follow Microsoft’s recommendations.

Unsupported scenarios

  • Vanity domain tenant rename (e.g., contoso.com) is not supported
  • Multi-Geo tenant rename is not supported
  • Tenants with more than 500K SharePoint sites are not yet supported
  • Government clouds, including GCC, GCC High, and DoD are not supported
