Microsoft Editor browser extensions for Edge and Chrome will be retired

Microsoft will retire the Editor browser extensions for Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome on 31 October 2025. After this date, AI-powered writing assistance for grammar, spelling, and style will no longer be supported via the extensions.

This retirement consolidates writing assistance into the built-in proofing experience in Microsoft Edge, reducing the need for separate installations while enabling ongoing AI-driven improvements.

Impact for your users

Microsoft Editor extensions have supported clarity, correctness, and confidence in writing. As AI capabilities advance, consolidating writing assistance into Microsoft Edge’s built-in proofing streamlines the experience and ensures access to the latest enhancements without the need for separate extension management.

For users currently using Google Chrome, consider switching to Microsoft Edge to take advantage of integrated proofreading features. Chrome users can alternatively rely on Chrome’s native writing and spell-check features.

Benefits of built-in proofing in Microsoft Edge:

  • Smarter, enhanced suggestions for grammar, spelling, and style powered by AI.
  • Integrated proofing experience directly in Microsoft Edge—no separate extensions needed.
  • Centralized updates and enterprise policy support with continuous AI improvements.
