Microsoft Teams is set to enhance its transcription capabilities with an important update. The default meeting policy settings for transcription will change for new tenants, shifting from off to on by default.
This update will impact global meeting policies created for new tenants, while existing policies in the Teams admin center will remain unchanged. However, this change will also affect existing tenants who have not customized their global Teams meeting policy.
Timeline
The update is expected to be completed by the end of March.
What Teams Administrators should know
- Tenants without customized meeting policies: The new default settings will apply, impacting these tenants.
- Tenants with customized meeting policies: Policies for user-level assignments or group-level assignments will remain unchanged and unaffected.
This change aims to streamline the adoption of transcription and enhance the use of all AI features within Microsoft Teams. It aligns transcription with the default policy for recording, which is also enabled by default in the Teams admin center.
After the rollout, transcription services will be more accessible, allowing users to turn on and use transcription as needed during meetings. However, transcription will not be automatically activated for every meeting.

Teams administrators will have the ability to turn off the transcription policy if needed.
